3. Miss Elizabeth Mackenzie was born on 21 Jul 1846 in Scotland, died on 6 Jul 1928 in Caulfield (Melbourne), Australia at age 81, and was buried in St Kilda Cemetery. She had no relationships and no children.
Noted events in her life were:
• Emigration: Emigration to Australia, 11 Aug 1887.
Emigrated with her sister Janet on the sailing ship "Loch Ness" which departed
Glasgow on 11/8/1887 and arrived at Port Melbourne on 3/11/1887 (PROV fiche
489). They emigrated apparently for "health reasons", but they had no specific
illnesses or health problems themselves. However several young family members
had died including their nephew, Daniel Campbell Mackenzie, who died from Tuberculous
meningitis in 1886 aged 4.5 years. Whilst the cause of other family deaths are
uncertain, it is known that there was a very high incidence of TB in Europe
ie. 1 in 4 deaths overall, and 1 in 3 in poor working class cities such as Glasgow
in the 200 years up to 1920. Australia at that time was promoted as having the
healthiest climate in the world, with a much lower incidence of TB.
4. Mr John Mackenzie was born about 1848 in Baillieston, Lanarkshire, Scotland and died in 1928 in Elsternwick (Melbourne), Vic, Australia aged about 80.

• Occupation: Coal miner and under manager at Wonthaggi State Coal Mine shafts 1&2.
John married Margaret Smith, daughter of William Smith and Catherine Johnstone, on 14 Jun 1878 in Barony, Glasgow. Margaret was born on 21 Aug 1856 in Muirkirk, East Ayrshire, Scotland, died on 2 Nov 1922 in 238 Bambra Rd, Caulfield (Melbourne), Vic, Australia at age 66, and was buried in Brighton Cemetery.

Dr John Gladstone Mackenzie was born on 23 Feb 1886 in Scotland, died on 21 May 1916 in Erquinghem (near Armentieres), France at age 30, and was buried in Erquinghem, Lys Cemetery, France (1.75 miles west of Armentieres, in Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard Cemetery Extension, plot 3, row J, grave 23).

General Notes: Coal mine manager and mining engineer. Managed Coalville coal mine (Gippsland, Vic) from 1891 to 1896, and then managed the coal mines for the Outtrim Howitt and British Consolidated Coal Company at Outtrim for 20 years until 1916. These were the largest producing, high grade black coal mines in Victoria at that time, and he was the longest serving mine manager.

• Occupation: Coal mine manager and mining engineer.
• Emigration: Emigration to Australia, 2 Aug 1889. Daniel emigrated from Scotland with his wife Agnes and children Charlotte 4, William 2, and David aged 2 months who died at sea. The reason for emigration was probably triggered by the death of their first born child, Daniel Campbell, from Tuberculous meningitis at age 4.5 years in 1886. They departed Glasgow aboard the sailing ship "Loch Ness" (the same ship on which Daniel's 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Janet, had previously emigrated) on 2 August 1889 and arrived at Port Melbourne on 21 October 1889 (PROV fiche 521).
Daniel married Agnes Stevenson Smith, daughter
of William Smith and Catherine Johnstone, on 25 Jun 1880 in Garnethill
Street, Glasgow. Agnes was born in 1859 in Scotland, died on 1 Sep 1938
in Melbourne, Australia at age 79, and was buried in St Kilda Cemetery.

7. Janet Mackenzie
was born in 1856 in Scotland, died in childbirth on 16 Jan 1896 at St Enoch's,
Elsternwick (Melbourne), Australia at age 40, and was buried in St Kilda Cemetery.
The cause of her death was Maternal death.
Death Notes: Died in childbirth, and the child was stillborn.

Janet married Montague Brown in 1895 in Victoria, Australia. Montague was born on 6 Aug 1870, died on 24 Dec 1942 at age 72, and was buried in St Kilda Cemetery.
General Notes: He was the elder of twins.

• Occupation: Artist. After the death of his wife, Janet, in chilbirth in 1896, he travelled to Paris and studied art (other students at that time included Claude Monet). He painted Australian landscapes with his impressionist style, mostly in oil and a few using water colours.
• Re-marriage: 25 Oct 1927. Following his return to Australia, the niece of his deceased wife, Charlotte, became his housekeeper. Many years later, they married in Tasmania (Ulverstone) because Victorian legislation forbade the marriage of Monty to his deceased wife's niece.
